Nights spent in the countryside have a distinctive flavor. We sometimes wake up in the dead of the night, and tiptoe through the slumbering house to the kitchen. Behind the kitchen windows, we discover a pitch black night, as opaque as Chinese ink, vast and cold, an unfathomable abyss which both frightens and beckons us. We are in the witching hour, when villains and demons come out. Thankfully, Cake Justice is awake and alert. The court passes judgment even at the most ungodly hour. Chocolate Cake by Muscade

It is often when least expected that some of the encounters which turn one’s existence upside down occur. How mysterious it is to feel oneself inextricably subjugated by an unknown person, catching sight of her amongst the crowd, eyeing her slowly up and down, observing her moves, gazing boldly at her hands, her clothes, her neck, her lips… Until the moment – simultaneously feared and eagerly awaited – when our eyes meet each other and lock gaze, setting fire to the blood in our veins. We are rarely foolish enough to pass up the opportunity of a new encounter, in whatever shape or form. Particularly when it comes to a face to face meeting with a new pastry, a curious Chocolate Cake which caught our attention in the pastry shop Muscade, nested in the arcades of the Palais Royal in Paris.   Continue reading “Chocolate Cake by Muscade”

Moist Cinnamon-Blackcurrant Cake with Oat Crumble Top by Claus

One can wonder at the duplicity of human nature, yet this trait is far from surprising to who dares to delve into the realm of introspection. Our supposed individuality is as changing as it is mysterious. While it may be perceived as the sum of our acts, our feelings and our thoughts, it is in equal measure the sum of their opposites. How many times did we make the unsettling discovery of finding ourselves – simultaneously and in equal intensity – brave and timorous, mature and childish, joyful and morose, in love and unmoved? Like us, cakes also hold in them this disconcerting duality, and need to be understood. This Moist Cinnamon-Blackcurrant Cake with Oat Crumble Top, for example, claims to be simultaneously moist and crunchy.
