Vanilla Tart by Utopie

There are moments when the world as it is seems unbearable, when we hit the wall of reality and stop in front of the barriers which rise ahead. Sometimes we feel chained, we give up on ideas which had previously guided our steps, we forsake certain paths… Yet in the end, this lucidity is a gift for utopians who – confronted with reality – search for, build, and escape into a new paradise. We believe that, far from hardening us and making us shrivel up, life’s challenges make us more optimistic. And we firmly believe in utopias. Perhaps we share this conviction with this eponymous bakery and pastry shop, whose specialty – a white Vanilla Tart – we audition today. Continue reading “Vanilla Tart by Utopie”

The Mandarin by The Mandarin Oriental

mandarin-oriental-chocolat-1-cj

We’ve all reveled in one of those little moments of pure vanity, where we indulge in scrutinizing and studying ourselves with relish. Like Narcissus subjugated by his reflection in the water, we are fascinated by the shiny dark chocolate icing in which our own image is reflected, darkened by a mysterious veil. Our face is printed on the somber and intriguing glaze which coats the flagship dessert of the Mandarin Oriental in Paris: we stare at it and it stares back at us. Oh! What little resistance we put up when stung by the sharp needle of desire. Looking only lasts so long – it’s now time to touch. Let us taste this dessert, soberly names the Mandarin. [Los Angeles] Chapter 7 : The Last Day / Fraisier by Chaumont Bakery

Some journeys are essential; they must be made. We leave and come back not quite the same. As if our lives had seamlessly deviated from the original path ahead. Though this change might be imperceptible when it happens, it nevertheless transforms the future. As L.A. starts to fade into the past, only images and memories remain, moments which are no more but whose trace we will forever carry. We chose one last comforting flavor before departure, considered a childhood treat for many: a Fraisier by Chaumont Bakery. [Los Angeles] Chapter 6 : The Road / Signature Millecrêpes by Lady M

Advancing into the night, we ride the freeways of California as if navigating long corridors devoured by obscurity. The only thing left are the lights by the curb of the road which scroll by, blinding us – discreet points at first, which, as we go faster and faster, blur into a continuous line imprinted on our retina. We feel the heat of the steering wheel under our hands, our warm skin starts to get clammy against the leather, our foot accelerates. 65 – let’s go over the limit. 75 – 85 – 100 miles an hour – this tunnel sucks us in. Danger electrifies us, we guzzle the kilometers by the dozens, by the hundreds – it never ends. Everything accumulates, multiplies, making the fever more intense, the euphoria more acute. We savor the moment like a treat in which we stack, endlessly, layer upon layer of pleasure, of emotion, of fantasy. Just like this dessert which aspires to infinity, alternating endlessly between crêpes and cream: a Signature Millecrêpes from Lady M Cake Boutique. [Los Angeles] Chapter 5 : Hallucinations / Religieuses by The Sweet Nuns

It’s almost unnoticeable, barely a little stroke of the tongue. Light as a feather, this little candy which we swallow, eyes closed, nevertheless takes us to a parallel world. It goes to our brain, makes us dizzy. Here in L.A., should one simply go along with the flow, and free oneself of the constraints of the real world? We hang on to our dreams and loose our footing, we leave surrounded by bursts of laughter, which echo in our ears like reminiscences from the past. Mirages, hallucinations pound our head like projectiles. We lose the sense of our own materialness, and a sudden feeling of exhilaration comes over us: the mysterious sensation of having communed – a religious emotion which gives rise to an insatiable appetite, which only the most spiritual treat can quench. There is only one thing to do: make our way to Sweet Nuns in Faircrest Heights, where we will kidnap four religieuses (French for nuns).
